Lastovo is the largest city situated on the northern shore of the island which shares the same name. There are less than 1,000 inhabitants in this town, but it is known as a favored tourist destination in this region of Croatia. Historically, the island of Lastovo has been mentioned in ancient sources dating back to the 6th to 8th century BC. But more importantly, Lastovo now showcases a collection of buildings that were erected in the 15th and 16th century. Many tourists would flock to Lastovo throughout the year to catch a glimpse of the marvelous architecture of its structures.
A famous church found in the oldest part of this town is the Church of Saint Cosmas and Damian, which has been around since the 14th century. As the main church of Lastovo, it is surrounded by several smaller chapels, which were built a few hundred years later, and are still popularly visited by sightseers. As examples, the chapels are named after St. Mary, St. Peter, and St. John.
Poklade is a yearly event that happens every February. This local carnival of Lastovo offers tourists a feel of the town’s culture, as performers are dressed in old costumes, reenacting significant events in Lastovo’s history.
