Zadar is the fifth largest a city in Croatia. It is also a port in Central Dalmatia. Zadar has population of 72,717 (2001), and 93% of its citizens are ethnic Croats. Zadar has been populated since prehistoric times.

The old town of Zadar is located on a sheltered peninsula closing the Old Port and the Jazine bay, and the new suburbs are located mainly along the north-eastern coast of the Old Port. At a smaller or greater distance from Zadar are the national parks Plitvice, Paklenica, Krka and Kornati, nature parks Velebit and Telascica, and more than 300 islands and islets.

Zadar is well known for its natural beauties, numerous coves beaches, cultural and historical monuments, restaurants and hotels. Tourism in Zadar has a long tradition, and Zadar is one of the most attractive tourist regions in the country.
